You may have heard of the herb called Withania: also known as Withania Somnifera, Winter Cherry, Ashwaganda, or Indian Ginseng. It is one of our most commonly used herbs and for good reason.
Withania is commonly used as an adaptogen, which is a trendy buzz word these days.
An adaptogen is a herb or plant based medicine that helps to modulate the body's stress response, ie it helps you adapt to stress. In addition to being an adaptogenic herb, Withania is also used for cognitive enhancement, as an antioxidant, as an anti-inflammatory agent, for immune system support, and as an anticancer herb. I commonly use it to bring up stress resiliance and bring down cortisol levels.
As the name suggests "somni" it can also be useful to bring on sleep, especially if stress impacts your sleep schedule.
